Nobody hands you a permission slip. That is the thing no one tells you about becoming an artist. There is no official ceremony, no credential, no moment when someone pulls you aside and says: You are an artist now. You may proceed. It does not work that way. It has never worked that way.
Jackie, the artist behind Uniquely Jackie, did not set out to build a digital art studio. She set out to use her mind — in every direction it wanted to go. She earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering. She was admitted to some of the most competitive high schools in New York City. And through all of it, she kept making art. Not because she had permission. Because she could not stop.
Redefining What 'Artist' Means
One of the first things to release is the narrow definition. Many people carry an image of 'the artist' that is specific and limiting: someone who went to art school, who works in a particular medium, who suffered for their craft, who is recognized by institutions.
Jackie is a digital artist who came to her practice through a lifetime of creative engagement — art lessons, museum visits, detailed greeting cards made during graduate school, years of developing a visual voice that is entirely her own. She did not follow a conventional art-world path. She built something uniquely her own — which is, of course, exactly where the studio gets its name.
Your path will look different from every other artist's path. That is not a flaw. That is the definition.
The Role of 'Other Things' in Your Art
One of the most liberating realizations for any artist is that the things you do outside of art are not obstacles to your art — they are the material of your art. Jackie's engineering background, her love of mathematics, her analytical precision — these are not compromises or detours. They are what make her work hers.
Whatever you have lived, studied, worked through, or loved: it belongs in your art. The artist who has also been a nurse, a teacher, a parent, a traveler, a scientist — that artist has access to something no purely trained artist does. Do not leave those parts of yourself at the door.
On Starting Later Than You Planned
There is a cultural myth that artists must start young or not at all — that if you did not emerge as a prodigy, the window has closed. This is false, and it has caused real harm to real people who had real gifts to offer the world.
Many of the most significant artists in history came into their practice later in life. The creative impulse does not have an expiration date. If you have been waiting for a better time to start — a time when you have more resources, more space, more confidence — consider that the waiting is the only thing standing between you and the work.
Building an Independent Practice
An independent art practice means owning the full process: the creative decisions, the output, the way your work is presented to the world. It is harder in some ways than working within an institution. There is no curriculum, no guaranteed audience, no built-in feedback structure. But it is also more honest. What you make, you made. The vision is yours. The voice is yours.
Jackie built Uniquely Jackie as exactly this kind of independent practice. The framed posters at Uniquely Jackie are the physical output of that practice — art made by one person, from one vision, available to anyone who recognizes something in it.
What 'Your Own Terms' Actually Means
Becoming an artist on your own terms means deciding what you make — not what the market demands, not what is trending, not what other people think you should make. It means deciding when and how you make it, according to the rhythms that work for you. And it means deciding what success looks like — whether that is recognition, the quality of the work itself, or the connection with the people who receive it.
Jackie decided, over the course of a lifetime, that success meant creating a body of work that expressed everything she loved — mathematics, art, travel, beauty, pattern, nature — without apology and without diminishment. That decision is Uniquely Jackie.
An Invitation
If you are somewhere on the path of becoming an artist on your own terms, know that the path is real and it is yours. The work you make from your own genuine perspective — shaped by everything you are and everything you have lived — is work the world does not already have. Make it. Begin. Keep going.
